High Bandwidth Ethernet Networks

Penguin Computing 1/10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet Arctica Switches provide the entire range of full line-rate data center switches (Edge, ToR, Scalable L2/L3 Leaf-Spine Designs) to suit any type of Enterprise Cloud / HPC networking use-case. Switches based on Open Compute Project designs come in all standard port configurations, enabling building of large fabrics using suitable network topologies. Switch hardware is provided with hot swappable redundant fans and power supplies and is built for high reliability requirements in hypercloud data centers.

Arctica switches provide users with the option to have either x86 or PowerPC based Control Processors. These switches provide pre-installed Open Network Installer Environment (ONIE), adopted by the OCP, to provide an environment for automated operating system provisioning. Switches support a choice of operating systems including Penguin Computing Arctica OS, Cumulus Linux, PicOS, BCOS+Ubuntu, providing organizations ample choice specific to their needs. Choice of OS enables users to choose from either those supporting traditional standardized command line interfaces or a pure debian Linux based system.

Seamless migration to Software Defined Networking options such as OpenFlow, VXLAN Overlay capabilities are supported on commoditized switching silicon and networking software stack. Penguin Computing Arctica Switches have been validated with Midokura MidoNet and PLUMgrid Network Virtualization solutions in deployments such as OpenStack.

High Speed Low Latency Network

Penguin Computing EDR solutions include the ConnectX-4 Single/Dual-Port Adapter supporting 100Gb/s with VPI. These support both EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand and 100Gb/s Ethernet connectivity, providing the highest performance and most flexible solution for high-performance, Web 2.0, Cloud, data analytics, database, and storage platforms. Tundra offers Infiniband solutions from both Intel and Mellanox, providing high-performing fabric solutions in a 1RU form factor.

Mellanox SB7700 and SB7790 36-port EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand switch systems deliver 7.2Tb/s of non-blocking bandwidth with 90ns port-to-port latency, providing up to 100Gb/s full bidirectional bandwidth per port. These stand-alone switches are an ideal choice for top-of-rack leaf connectivity or for building small to medium sized clusters.

Penguin Computing also provides solutions based on Intel’s latest Omni-Path Architecture, enhancing the performance and scalability required in Exascale Computing.

Omni-Path Architecture helps to build a broad array of solutions starting from entry-level HPC fabrics to large clusters of 10,000 nodes or higher.

Benefits include:

  • Traffic flow optimization features reduce the variation in latency seen through the network by high priority traffic in the presence of lower priority traffic, addressing a traditional weakness of both Ethernet and InfiniBand in which a packet must be transmitted to completion once the link starts even if higher priority packets become available.
  • A message rate of 195M messages/sec per switch-port with a port-to-port latency of 100-110ns.
  • Dynamic Lane Scaling helps save time and increase productivity in the event of a failure on one or more of the four lanes on a multi-link traffic flow.
Management Networks

Penguin Computing Arctica GigE Ethernet switch lines enables small, midmarket and large enterprises to leverage technologies that were developed by the world’s largest cloud operators and hyperscale data centers and provides solutions that improve data center networking.

Arctica 4804ip is a low cost 1GbE switch for out-of-band management. This switching platform provides a very low price point, minimizing the capital and operational expenditure for the rack management function and this is accomplished by limiting the purpose only to management traffic and limited Layer 3 functionality. Rack management can be performed by any Linux server administrator without the need for specialized network administration expertise or experience.

Arctica 4804ip is designed for managing the entire rack – servers, top of rack and management switches – all of which may be automated and managed using standard Linux tools such as Chef, Puppet or CFEngine. Penguin Computing provides the option of running either Arctica OS or Cumulus Rack Management Platform software, this switch is based on an x86 Control Processor and Broadcom StrataXGS Hurricane 2 Data Plane Processor.
